Starting out in powerlifting competition: While there is no one size fits all program for training, there are some one size fits all tips for starting out in powerlifting:

  1. Train for success – video your workouts and have someone look at them for strictness and following the rules.
  2. Read the rule book for your federation – you don’t want surprises at weigh-in/equipment check or on the platform.
  3. Think about your opening attempts. Keep the ego in check. Remember it is not where you start but where you finish that is important. Opening attempts get you in the meet, second and third attempts are to demonstrate your power.
  4. Visualize your attempts.
  5. Execute.
  6. Ask questions of the veterans of the sport. Learn from their successes and failures.
  7. Have fun.

Where do you start with setting fitness goals? The first step is to decide the you want to improve your fitness. It is never too late to take this step. When you make this decision, the next step is to find a certified trainer to assist you in setting up a program. Here you have to be careful – COVID has created a plethora of “online coaches” that have no clue what they are doing and only provide one size fits all programs. Research your potential coaches and trainers. Make sure they have the educational background and experience in the field to help you progress.
